Trial 43: PRELIMINARY EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF GROWTH OF PRODUCTIVITY RESULTING FROM ADMINISTRATION OF TURVAL 4 CATTLE PROBIOTIC TO MILCH COWS

Dr. Paolo Valles (Trieste), Dr. Cesare Lui (Mantova)

Testing method

The test was carried out in a farm in the province of Cremona, Italy.

28 Friesian milch cows were given 10 gr. of TURVAL 4 Cattle per head/day, together with UNIFEED-type homogeneous feed from a mixing wagon.

Materials

. F: UNIFEED feed.

Manufacturing company: composition determined directly by the veterinary, and including cereals, hay, supplements and salts.

.TURVAL 4 Cattle : probiotic for diet integration.

Manufacturing company : TURVAL Laboratory, Pradamano, Udine, Italy. Authorisation MG 252 of 27 September 1994.

Ingredients: a balanced mixture of natural products such as Turval B (lactic yeasts Kluyveromyces marxianus/fragilis B0399, milk whey; fine wheat bran).

Remarks on the results of the test

Though the test was only a preliminary to an investigation of the potential effect of the probiotic on the quantity and quality of milk produced, the following facts may be pointed out:

There was an increase in ingestion, equal to 7.5% of dry matter (2.5 kg. more of ingested feed per head/day).

There was a reduction in the quantity of somatic cells in the milk.

Economic remarks

As an initial economic finding of these preliminary tests, it is possible to conjecture that the administration of the probiotic, in spite of higher costs due to the purchase of the latter and to the greater amount of feed to be administered, may result in an overall increase in farming profit, thanks to an improvement in the quality and quantity of milk produced.

Conclusions

The purpose of this test was to verify whether a specific probiotic for cattle such as TURVAL 4 Cattle is able to cause an increase in the ingestion of dry matter that, besides being correlated with a probable auxinic effect (a greater plastic yield) - to be verified with other tests - in milch cows should also result in the production of a greater quantity of milk. Some tests that were performed, but have not become systematic yet, lead us to conjecture that there may also be an improvement in the quality of the milk produced (a considerable decrease in somatic cells was found).
