What is Kluyveromyces B0399?

The world of probiotics is vast and often complex, populated by many bacteria. However, among these, a unique protagonist stands out—not a bacterium, but a yeast. It is a next-generation probiotic: Kluyveromyces B0399 (Kluyveromyces Marxianus Fragilis B0399), registered and recognized under various names: Turval B0399, K-Marxianus B0399, KMF-B0399, KMF and K-B0399. To understand what it is and why it is considered a valuable ally for our health, let's imagine it as a "super-yeast" with special characteristics that distinguish it from common lactobacilli, bifidobacteria, and S. boulardii

Kluyveromyces B0399 in detail

Kluyveromyces B0399 is a probiotic lactic yeast.

  • Yeast: This means it is a more complex and robust organism than bacteria. It is a "cousin" of the yeast we use to make bread, but with very different skills.
  • Lactic: Unlike yeasts that ferment beer or wine by producing alcohol, this yeast feeds on sugars and produces lactic acid, a very beneficial substance for our intestine.
  • Probiotic: It means "for life". It is a microorganism that, when taken in the right quantities, brings health benefits to the host.

Its story begins far away, in the Caucasus mountains. Researchers isolated it from Kefir, a fermented milk drink consumed for millennia and famous for the longevity of the populations that use it. Scientists discovered that one of the secrets of Kefir's power was precisely this specific yeast.

The Three "Superpowers" of B0399

To explain simply how it acts, we can identify three main characteristics that make it unique:

  • Resists and Arrives Alive: Many common lactic ferments are delicate; when we ingest them, most are destroyed by the gastric juices of the stomach (which are very acidic). B0399, instead, has a natural "armor" (a cell wall made of chitin) that protects it. This allows it to pass the stomach barrier and arrive in the intestine alive and active, ready to work.
  • It is the Friend of Antibiotics: This is perhaps its most useful feature. When we take antibiotics to treat an infection, the drug does not distinguish between bad and good bacteria: it kills them all, often causing diarrhea and weakness. Since B0399 is a yeast (and not a bacterium), antibiotics do nothing to it. We can take it during antibiotic treatment: it will remain in the intestine to protect us, occupying the place of good bacteria until they regrow. It's like a "caretaker" who keeps the house occupied to prevent unwanted intruders (like Candida) from entering.
  • Sweeper of Sugars and Gas: Many people suffer from a bloated belly because they do not digest some sugars well, such as lactose (in milk) or inulin (in many vegetables). These sugars stay in the belly and ferment, creating gas. B0399 possesses special enzymes (like chemical scissors) that cut these complex sugars, eliminating the cause of bloating at the root. This is why it is recommended for those who suffer from irritable bowel or lactose intolerance.

What is it for?

Kluyveromyces marxianus fragilis can help to:

  • Reduce belly bloating: Reduces gas and abdominal pain typical of colitis or irritable bowel.
  • Improve digestion: Helps digest milk and fibers.
  • Strengthen defenses: "Trains" our immune system to be more reactive but less inflamed (useful for example in allergies or dermatitis).
  • Protect the intestine: Especially when under stress, traveling, or taking medications.
